John Bishop is certainly enjoying his stint as Dan in Doctor Who<\/em>. After initially turning the role down<\/a> due to touring commitments, the global pandemic freed up his schedule and allowed him to join the cast for Series 13. He’s described the experience as ‘one of the best things that I\u2019ve done’<\/a> and it seems he’s relished throwing himself into the physical demands of the series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a new interview, stunt co-ordinator Crispin Layfield describes Bishop as \u2018a frustrated stuntman\u2019, always eager to do the physical sequences himself where possible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018He was involved in a lot of wires and we had a few bits where he had to fall through the ceiling onto the floor… John\u2019s constantly, \u201cCan I do it? Can I do it?\u201d I said \u201cOkay, we\u2019ll test it with a stuntman\u201d and then we did a slow run with John and he had a great big grin on his face, \u201cI want to go faster!\u201d And he was fantastic, honestly.\u2019 <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Layfield, principal stunt co-ordinator on Doctor Who<\/em> since Series 5, describes having to rein the actor in occasionally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018The odd time, I said \u201cNo John, we can\u2019t do this. I can\u2019t slam you into that wall too hard. If you get injured, then we\u2019re stuffed for a little while! We can\u2019t carry on filming. Certain elements we can use a stunt double for but obviously I want you to do as much as we possible can because it\u2019s all about you!\u201d ‘<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The spirit of the HAVOC team is alive and well in Cardiff, with the Doctor herself, Jodie Whittaker, another one not wanting to pass up an opportunity to throw herself off something: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Jodie is a seasoned pro. She\u2019s been there, done it now. She\u2019s very capable, very physical. Whenever her stunt double turns up, she\u2019s always saying, \u201cWhy is she here?! Why am I not allowed to do it?\u201d.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

With John Bishop’s time on Doctor Who<\/em> potentially extending to the end of the Thirteenth Doctor era<\/a>, it’s possible we’ll be seeing Dan falling through ceilings for a while yet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
